NAL Asunnot have good experiences with One4all’s new housing service

Customer and resident experience has always been at the core of One4all’s development of housing services. “We develop services for our customers, so the starting point for developing our services is always our customers’ needs. This successful pilot of the temporary door code in collaboration with NAL Asunnot is a good example of successful co-development,” says Kitte Hamilton, CEO of One4all.

As a result of co-development, a new housing service that facilitates residents’ everyday life was created.

“We are really pleased that we found a solution to our challenge, thanks to One4all. In a short time, One4all developed an agile service tailored to our needs, enabling us to serve our residents even better,” says Riikka Teelmäki, Communications and Marketing Planner at NAL Asunnot. The security of the housing complex and resident experiences challenged us to think of new solutions

We began developing and piloting a new door code service, One4all Access, with NAL Asunnot in a selected property in late 2021. One4all Access is an additional service created within the existing resident application used by the property.

The challenge for the property was the absence of a door phone system. One solution residents came up with was wedging something to block the door and to keep it open. This meant that during parties, the external door of the 13-story building could be left open late into the night, allowing anyone passing by access to the property. Apart from the security risk, this also led to heat loss in winter, increasing heating costs.

“In a 13-story building, it was understandable that residents had a lot of feedback, especially regarding the lack of a door phone system. The COVID-19 era amplified this significantly, as residents were working from home and, for security reasons, wanted to have food delivered,” says Päivi Ojala, Director of Rental Services at NAL Asunnot.

One4all Access evolved into Ovikoodi (Door Code)

A flexible service adapts to the customer’s needs, so One4all Access was named Ovikoodi (Door Code) at the request of NAL Asunnot for the residents.

The new Door Code access control service solved the property’s previous challenges. With this service, a resident can generate a temporary code for the external door of the property. The code can be conveniently sent directly to guests or service providers via email through the Door Code service. Alternatively, the resident can copy the code from the service and send it using their preferred method.

The code is valid for a predetermined time, and once this time expires, it cannot be used anymore. NAL Asunnot also worked with us to define rules and restrictions for using the service, ensuring that its usage remains manageable. For example, codes cannot be created indefinitely into the future; they can only be generated for a predetermined period and remain valid for that maximum time.

1500 access codes created & satisfied users

“When we received confirmation from One4all that the service worked, we informed residents by displaying the information on the property’s staircase display,” says Päivi Ojala.

Residents of the pilot property eagerly adopted the service immediately after its launch. Over four months, residents created about 1,500 access codes, nearly 400 codes per month. Over 60% of the property’s residents have used the service, so it hasn’t relied on just a few residents to sustain its usage.

Salla, a resident of NAL Asunnot, shared her experience using the door code with us.

“I’ve used the Door Code service when ordering food delivery and when friends have come over. It’s been convenient not to have to go to the external door to receive a food delivery or let a friend in. The Door Code service benefits the other party too: food delivery drivers and friends don’t have to wait outside in the cold for someone to open the door; they can enter themselves with a temporary door code.

The Door Code service also enhances the sense of security, knowing that outsiders cannot exploit the code if it falls into the wrong hands. I’ve used the Door Code service about a few times a month and can recommend its use to others.”

A predetermined time-valid door code is entered into the door code reader.

Resident experiences using the door code service

We conducted a survey among residents of NAL Asunnot who participated in the pilot. Residents consistently provided similar feedback and experiences with the new Door Code service.

All respondents to our survey unanimously agreed on their experience with the service, rating the Door Code service as extremely useful, giving it a full score of 10/10. Residents reported sharing the code with food delivery drivers during food deliveries, with friends or other individuals during visits, with package carriers or pickup persons, and with guests during parties. The code has also been used in situations where keys were forgotten at home.

Here are some comments from residents:

“Convenient innovation.”

“Fantastic innovation!”

“A truly functional solution!”

“This greatly facilitates operations, and I believe other residents have also been satisfied with this.”

“Excellent service! Sometimes I had to struggle a lot to allow a package delivery driver to bring a package. With the current door code system, that situation would have been avoided. So I’ve been really satisfied with this. It significantly eases remote work when you can actually order lunch directly to your doorstep.”
